How one high school senior turned basketball into support for children

In a heartwarming display of compassion and leadership, The Academy of the Holy Names High School Senior, Morgan Brewer recently organized a school-wide fundraiser to support MHA of Columbia Greene's Child Advocacy Center (CAC), a local organization dedicated to providing treatment and prevention services for child abuse. The fundraiser which took place this past fall semester, raised an impressive $672.00 as well as a full box of art supplies to support art therapy, helping the CAC continue its critical work in the community.

Morgan, a bright student with a passion for advocacy and community service, was inspired to take action learning about the CAC's mission through volunteer work at a younger age. "I remember volunteering writing cards and packing little bags for the kids when I was younger. Those experiences always stuck with me," she said. "I knew I wanted to continue to give back to the center."

After learning more about the CAC's art therapy program, Morgan decided the 3v3 basketball tournament would make for a great opportunity to raise supplies to help support the program. Each player entering the tournament was required to donate an art supply item in order to participate. At the end of the day, a box overflowing with supplies had been raised.

The funds and supplies raised will go directly to MHA of Columbia Greene's Child Advocacy Center program, which offers a range of services, including trauma-focused therapy, forensic interviews, and educational programs aimed at preventing child abuse. The CAC relies heavily on community donations to continue its work, making efforts like Morgan's fundraiser invaluable.

"Morgan's initiative and dedication are truly inspiring," said Paul Taylor, Chief Development & Communications Officer for MHACG. "Her efforts will make a real difference in the lives of children and families we serve. We're so grateful for her support."

As Morgan prepares to graduate, she plans on attending West Point Academy, with the hopes to continue making a difference. Everyone has the power to make a difference, no matter how big or small. If we all come together, we can create a safer, brighter future for every child.
